The History of BMW
In the 1980's BMW celebrated the completion of the BMW Research and Engineering Centre. BMW's sales peaked in the US, in 1986, but dropped steeply partly due to two new luxury contenders. In the 1980's BMW wins the only World Touring Car Championship ever awarded. BMW also becomes the first company to install ABS brakes on motorcycles. In the 1990':s BMW returned to making aircraft engines, in a joint venture with Rolls Royce PLC. In 1992, BMW outsold Mercedes for the first time in Europe, and in 1994 BMW acquired the majority of Rover Group. Due to the cost of modernizing Rover, BMW sells Rover Group in 2000, but choose to retain the MINI brand.
