The History of BMW
In the early 1950's BMW returned to the automotive sector, but were met with poor sales. Also in the 1950's, BMW won the World Motorcycle Sidecar Championship. They almost merged with Daimler-Benz, due to financial losses. They also had their first success in the automotive market, with the 700. In the 1960's BMW focused in on sports sedans and compact touring cars. They also stepped out of airplane engine market, by selling their plant in Allach. In the 1970's they began and completed construction on their new head office in Munich. This building was designed to look like a four cylinder engine. Also BMW becomes the European Formula 2 Champion, the European Touring Car Champion and the World Sidecar Champion for the twentieth time. Throughout these decades, BMW became a strong contender in automotive and motorcycle markets.
