BMW was established in 1913; when a Bavarian named Karl Rapp begin an
aircraft engines shop in Munich named Rapp Motoren Werke. In 1917 he redesigned
the company with Austrian Franz-Josef Popp. They changed the name to Bayerische Motoren Werke.
In 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was signed. This treaty prohibited German companies from make
aircraft and aircraft engines. This caused BMW to switch to making air
brakes for rail cars.

The BMW logo was inspired by the rotating propeller of a plane. |
